Does it damage us psychologically when we destroy something we find beautiful?

A beautiful creature does not merit more compassion than an ugly one. Quite the contrary, actually. Speaking for myself, I am far more likely to show compassion for the ugly duckling than for the real beauty. The former has a much harder life and needs a pick-me-up. The latter gets constant praise and attention and needs precious little. This rule applies as much to the animal kingdom as to the human world I assume you're referring to.

As to your follow-up query, I think it should damage us psychologically whenever we destroy anything, especially a living thing. Whether it does or not is obviously a matter of conscience. I derive no enjoyment whatsoever in destroying anything, let alone anyone. Beautiful or not, a person who finds pleasure in destroying something is psychotic.

That's a great question. I think it's because we don't know much about the creatures other than what they look like. If we see a hot looking guy, we may look on him more favorably than a fella with ripped jeans and messy hair. When we find out that the good-looking guy is a womanizer, but the other young man just saved the life of a drowning child, then that's different. To answer the second question, yes anything we destroy damages us, beautiful or not.

I realize that all you people can say that true beauty comes from the heart.. but you don't look at someone and see their heart. You see the person, before you get to know them and know their nature. When chosing who you're going to get to know better.. you're chosing beauty first. Now, I think that people like beautiful things.. but I think people have more compassion for ugly things. There is no need to show beauty compassion, they don't need compassion .. they don't need pity.. people in general reserve that for ugly things. Now, in response to your last question, I think that people are damaged when they destroy anything beautiful or not.

While it is true that much of what we consider beautiful is culturally specific there is a genetic predisposition toward symmetry, as it's presence indicates healthy genes.
It is an interesting fact that in the most primitive and the most technologically advanced societies on the planet a symmetrically balanced face is considered beautiful. Thus I would argue that our notions of beauty, however different on the surface are based on the genetic propensity to find a healthy mate and raise healthy offspring in order to propagate ones genetic information.
A beautiful creature merits more compassion than an ugly one because as far as our instincts are concerned the beautiful (i.e. healthy) have more chance of surviving and a better set of genes , as evidenced by their symmetrical features, and thus are worth expending resources and energy on while the ugly (i.e. defective) quite simply are not.

Some of the ugly creatures can also be cute. Beauty come from the heart.

I think it damages people later in life when mind becomes the hell they have to live with.

While many may be giving the beautiful one the compassion, they may also be disabling the beautiful creature of its independence and problem solving skills.

The ugly creature will have to use more of its skills to compensate. Typically, this allows the ugly one to exceed above and beyond the beautiful one in it's independence and problem solving.

So, Justice is still balancing her scales allowing each to have special gifts unique to them. We can only hope each will recognise their gifts and use them justly.
