A solar eclipse in the 1910's (thinking 1919, but not sure) allowed scientists to take a rare look at Mercury's location without the sun overwhelming the view. That its location was in accordance to Einstein's Theory of General Relativity (versus classical models) gave credence to Einstein's work. So I suppose that scientific research is the principal benefit of solar eclipses.

Back in the time of the Roman Wars huge wars were stopped because of the solar eclipse. The people thought that the gods were angry with the war.

It makes for an excellent opportunity to observe the solar corona from the comfort of home, and a great excuse to visit some exotic locations. I also think it could be a great tourist attraction if we lived in a Star Trek universe where aliens would flock here to see it.
The chances of something similar anywhere else are pretty remote.

Well, I have a friend who has a Coven of Witches who live in the apartment above his. We benefit greatly during an eclipse because they (the Witches) always throw a great party during one.

the only real use of an eclispe is to be in awe of a spectale that happens every so often. it makes people wonder about the great unknown and gives people the inspiration and wonder to go out there and look for answers to questions that have escaped us for so many years. apart from that, there is nothing to gain but knoweldge and amazement.

Not much, just having a shadow all our lives upon us, unless it might critically change the weather pattern somehow. Ice age might you say? Possibly, just it's up to god to decide.
