its called an erection. the sensitive area has many nerves and veins and stuff, thus wen he gets excited/horny, the blood rushes in, thus the penis gets erected and enlarges.

Man this could be the silliest question ever. Well, it USED to be that when a man got horny his ears would enlarge but then people started dying out because there was no possibility of intercourse. So then the penis evolved hardening powers, which led to the continuation of the species. Damn man. Read a book.

Charles Darwin called it natural selection. Men without an enlarged penis when **ahem** horny weren't able to breed. Their genetic code didn't get passed along and we were left with a world full of turgid penises. As it turns out, all of our fathers were able to maintain an erection (for at least a couple of seconds anyway). Crazy how that works.

The real answer is that when a man becomes sexually aroused, ("horny"), extra blood rushes into his penis causing it to swell or enlarge and stiffen. A more simplistic way of visualizing it would be to imagine filling a balloon with air or water. Additionally if you are asking this question you are probably too young to have sex.

If guys walked around with erection all the time (and many women think we do anyway), we would be bumping into people, getting stuck in the elevator, knocking things off of desks.
Keep the penis protected until it has to come out.

It has to do with lying...Pinocchio's nose grew when he lied. When a man lies to a woman to get her into bed, his penis grows larger, hence most women think that all men lie...at least part of the time!
