Because they have a VERY powerful lobby and keep the myths about Israel alive and well in the minds of the American populace. 1) Israel IS NOT the underdog in the region. They are better equipped and have better led forces than any other power in the Middle East.
2) Israel IS NOT a democracy. There are different rules for different people. The Arabs are not protected under the law in the same manner as an Israeli.
3) Israel sent over 700,000 Arabs into exile in 1947-48 -- this is an established fact by an ISRAEILI scholar (Benny Morris). Between 1949-56, Israeilis killed over 2700 unarmed arabs and in 1967 it expelled over 100,000 Palestinians from the West Bank.
4) The State of Israel was established thru the use of terror -- not unlike the US in the Revolutionary War -- but let's not pretend for a moment that the Palestinians don't have a right to be upset. How would Americans act if a foreign invader attempted to throw us out of New York?
For a good perspective on the subject, read "The Israel Lobby & U.S. Foreign Policy" by John Mearsheimer (University of Chicago) and Stephen Walt (Harvard University). A free download is available at http://ksgnotes1.harvard.edu/Research/wpaper.nsf/rwp/RWP06-011/$File/rwp_06_011_walt.pdf
I believe the more educated American become, the less supportive they will be of Israel. Happy reading!

The state of Israel was legally created out of the dismemberment of the Ottoman Empire at the end of World War I. The area was desolate, desert and swamp, with some small towns and a few inhabitants, many of them nomads. The inhabitants considered themselves mostly Syrian. The Balfour Declaration issued by the British, who were given the mandate over the area by the League of Nations. Jews have lived in the country since Biblical times. The Arabs from the surrounding areas were lured to "Palestine" by the industry and prosperity that the Jews brought to the region. Envy, hatred and religious fanaticism turned the Arabs against the Jews. In 1947, under pressure, the British resigned their mandate. The same year, the United Nations mandated partioning of the territory. The Jews, though disappointed, accepted the partition. The Arabs rejected it and launched war against Israel. The armies of five Arab countries invaded. Following the exhortations of the invaders, the Arab residents got out of the way hoping to return after victory was attained. They could then reclaim their property and that of the Jews, all of whom would have been killed or would have fled. Israel won. That and that alone is the source of the Palastinian "refugees". Had the Arabs accepted the UN partition plan, there would now have been a state of "Palestine" for the last 58 years. The might have attained a similar level of prosperity, advancement and development as Israel. 50% of Israel's population now includes refugees from Morocco, Algeria, Iraq and Yemen. All were accepted by Israel with open arms and have become successful members of their society. The Palestinians refused to integrate these refugees into their population and instead confined them to "refugee camps". The ones there are now fourth generation and through no fault of Israel.
Learn your history. Isreal has a right ot be there and defend themselves.

There is plenty of protest. If you stop to think about it, the reason for support is that it's the only democratic government in the middle east . All others are mostly monarchies that are unstable. We need an ally with stability. If ever, other stable governments form in the area you'll see a less support to Israel and closer ties to the Arab republic.
Take oil out of the equation, (which we all demand our government keep flowing[rent 3 days of the condor]) and you'll probably witness more nationalization than in any other time in history.

Spike, read Inquisitor's response. The reason th Palestinians do what you say they do, is that Israel declared war on them FIRST, ripped them of home and basic rights, and continues to do so.

I`ts all in the name man and how people are labled, looking back in time you had the European conquerors coming to the New world finding an established civilization but labeling them as "savages"so then it was acceptable to kill them and take their land, notch this up a few centuries you have the Colonial Empires who labled another established civilization as slaves even though a very old tradition practiced by every know empire known to man however this also was acceptable so then again it was ok to kill them and take their land, in our time we have that lable that is ever so present in our society,"terrorist"in our time you simply have to lable a people or civilization as a "Terrorist"and he or she is open game and so it is acceptable to kill them and take their land, mind you I do accept that their are people who use terrorist means to bring about change in one way or another and I don`t support them but I also know that the same Powers that be that labled these Terrorists used Terrorist tactics themselves in the past but it was acceptable then.

Why do Palestinians dig tunnels and kill 2 Israeli soldiers and kidnap another? Who do Palestinians wear bomb belts and blow up buses, pizza restaurants, and malls? Why do they hijack planes and blow up planes? Why do they hold Israeli athletes hostage and then kill them in Munich? Why don't they recognize the state of Israel and their right to exist?

Israel usually retaliates. That has always been their posture. You bomb them, they are going to bomb you and you can take that to the bank!
Quit bombing them and they won't bomb you!! Sounds easy enough, but too many people want to be martyrs I guess!
