Hostas are a good plant but there are several other plants too. Try Ferns. Ferns differ in size, shape and color. The ferns are easy to maintain and will return each year which makes them an extra bonus. If you want something smaller try impatients which are easy to come buy at any local nursery. Each year you will have to replant them but you will be able to change colors and varieties each year which makes it fun. For an added bonus you could grow Ivy up and around your tree or a colorful Clematis. Both of these will also return year after year.

Impatients are my favorite "around the tree, shade spot". the colors are so luscious and bloom profusely. Get a six pack of every color you can find from your local nursery place. They have some new colors out. This is a happy, alive, joyful look to the yard.
They also look nice planted with other plants for a burst of color rather than solid color.
Caladiums look nice, too, and come in all colors. This gives you a quieter more serene look.
You may even get "Yard of The Month"!

Try this website: http://springhillnursery.com/default.asp. You can look up your zone and they will give you some good starting ideas on what to plant. They can be overpriced though; I prefer to research and then look through eBay for a reputable plant seller.
