Personally: That every hour is precious and to live my life to the fullest because you never know just what is going to happen next.

As a society: that arrogance can get you brought down a peg or two. We believed we were invincible and no one would dare touch us. Our arrogance caused us to be lax in security which opened the door for an attack. I think we learned to be more cautious and not expect our reputation to keep us from attack.

Seems pretty easy, pretty basic and direct. NEVER AGAIN. But unfortunately most Americans have a short historical memory. I'm sure we said we learned the same lesson after the day that shall live in infamy, Dec 7, 1941; attack on the US Naval Base in Pearl Harbor, HI.

Avoid kneejerk reaction.

The NUMBER ONE lesson is the one the US achieved so successfully: PUTTING TOGETHER A COALITION FORCE like they did in "Operation Desert Storm".

Fighting a borderless war requires collective active participation in the broadest sense by many countries with significant military involvement - not just Britain. It must not be seen as America fighting Iraq, Iran, or any others.

there is no safety that can be had! That for America there is constantly a possibility of attack at any given point in time, anywhere, and we shouldn't take anything for granted, up to and including the very moment of the event. That there is no retribution, what's done - is done, it can't be "taken back"!
