It depends on where you are located; I would suggest hitting a site like this one first: http://springhillnursery.com/default.asp?sid=400286&eid=
You can find out what zone you live in and also research what plants work best in what areas (sunny, shady, etc.).
Spring Hill and other online nurseries can be pricey though. I would suggest after researching you check eBay or a nursery in your area. Believe it or not eBay has some great plant sellers on their site (ALWAYS check feedback before purchasing).
For a warmer climate I love bougainvillea. It has beautiful flowers and is just a lovely plant. It will need a support in your planter pot. Also, what about a nice small tree like you suggested with either annuals or perennials surrounding it?

Palm trees are a haven for Palmetto Bugs (roaches). I love a Wild Olive Tree. How about Plumeria? Mine are so beautiful and smell long after the bloom falls off. Yellow seems to smell stronger than pink, I think. You can't go wrong with a Ficus. Plus they are great to hang lights on for atmosphere.

You need to provide what zone you are in or city and country so that someone can provide advice on a plant that will survive well in your location. If you are in the US, south of zone6, a Japanese Maple would probably do well in a pot, but you should select one that will stay small. Do you want something that blooms, provides shade, looks tropical? It helps to get an idea of what you are after.
