I'm from that region and live in New Jersey.
It has a long and complex history and is actually very pretty.
My hometown's website is:

http://www.kaiserslautern.de/index.html?lang=en

This has a lot of info:

http://www.genealogienetz.de/reg/RHE-PFA/rhein-p.html

If I can be of any help, feel free to send me an e-mail
