When there is no draft, sometimes when the candle has been burning, every now and then it will "flicker" but the flame will still be straight and ther is no breeze!

If there is no draft in the room, and no physical movement (ie. you're just sitting there quietly watching the flame), it indicates the entry of a spirit. This can be a spirit of many forms, such as a ghost (of a loved one usually, but other wandering ghosts are possible as well), a spirit guide who's trying to contact you, a fairy or angel. Next time it happens, try asking who has joinned you in the room, and listen to what answer fills your mind. I would strongly suggest keeping track of such encounters in a journal of some sort, so that patterns can be examined later on, or you can meditate on the details at a later date.

Candle Flame Meanings

Flames always flicker when they burn. The flame of a candle is burning away at the wax, the wick and oxygen in a process that is not constant leading to the flame flickering. No breeze need be present for this to happen. Sorry, a flickering candle is not necessarily an indication of ghosts.

Either there actually IS a draft, and you can just not feel it, or that there was an air pocket in the candle that was just released.

It does not take a lot of air movement to make a candle flicker...you yourself could do it with very little effort without meaning to.

I agree with Moon. When the doors and windows are close and lock. You lit a candle, watch the flame. flame is going to dance around some. But when it stands still and grows higher. Then a spirit has come into the room. The higher the flame, the strong the spirit is. Ask a question out loud. Why and see what come to mind.
Or you can make a light ring. Place tea light candles around you. Make sure someone else is with you. Close your eyes, and think of a dead love one. Bring fourth this spirit by calling it name. Just make sure they were in good in life.

To me it means that if you know you are in the darkness, meaning 'unenlightened' then pursue things that will light your way. A candle lights the way (the path towards enlightenment), it illuminates your inner darkness and shines light on your true self (that of an enlightened being). So far most of the answer have pointed out (illuminated) this point. The action of lighting the candle requires the knowledge that you have one, that you have the means and that you can find it in the darkness. I do not know what the proverb meant to address but that is how I would take it. Thank you for the Q
