I have just started taking an anti-depressant, Clomipramine, and i was wondering what affects it has on the menstrual cycle. I had my period last week, before taking the pills and it lasted 5days (as usual) My last period was 4days late. I am now bleeding again, but its not like usual period blood. Will my anti-depressant do this to me? What should i do? I dont usually bleed between periods! Please help

I am an alternative medicinal therapist and an ex nurse. The answer is yes it would. Anti-depressants work on the brain and of course our brain controls our hormones how can it do this if it impaired by these terrible drugs. I suggest you take a natural anti-depressant. ST JOHNS WORT, it has NO side effects, it may take a little time to get into the system but at least you know it's not going to screw your body up. If you want any more advice I am always here but give me your e mail address for a reply

Also aromatherapy would also help your depression, I deal in this therapy also

The #1 hormone - because it can affect the production of all the other hormones - is insulin. Ask your doctor for a fasting insulin blood test . Ask for a copy of your results. 10 or higher is abnormal for an adult.

Also ask for a saliva test. This test will tell you if any of your feminine hormones are not at the best levels. This may account for why your anti-depressant is having an effect on your periods. It could just be a coincidence. Since I do not know your age, if you are near or over 42, you might be starting peri-menopause. (Check out other Yahoo!Answers for this one). I do not like doctors who prescribe stuff without testing insulin levels first.

Insulin levels can have an effect on moods and elation/depression.

Your symptoms (all of them) could be related to low blood sugar. You may want to check out www.hufa.org, and click on the symptoms link to check yourself out.
