If I can demonstrate a fact to be true myself (i.e. troubleshooting a computer program and reproducing a bug), I will do so. This is a fundamental part of my job.
If I cannot demonstrate a fact myself, I will often defer to statistics from credible sources. Since so few people understand statistics, and those who do either abuse them or get them wrong through some small error, I understand very few things in this manner.
Most of my judgement relies on anecdotal evidence and gut feelings -- how would I respond in a given situation? Could I expect other people to respond in the same way? Is this fact likely to be true? How will people respond if I put my name to this fact, and how can I respond to their counterclaims?
If I do not know how people will respond to my 'facts', I quote them anyway, and let people respond. Through this, I can begin to assess the fact further and learn more about the problem or information being discussed.

After I have meditated on it for at least thirty minutes. I don't need to take any special steps to be convinced of the truth of something; I just eventually decide whether it's true or not.
Sometimes, something as simple as a coin toss will provide the answer.
Are you making some kind of a big deal out of this issue? Coming to believe something or disbelieve something is not that big a problem.
People believe all kinds of stuff that isn't true, and they are still going about their lives in relative normalcy.
Oh, and one other thing: The other day I stepped on a poptart.

well, fact is something that is real and true. it has happened. you can discern it through the senses and reason and there is no doubt or prejudgment about it.
for something to be fact is not necessarily that you test it in the laboratory and observe it scientifically, as a human being we have perception and feeling. love is a fact because we experience it. and it's different with every person. but it still remains a fact.

When there is indisputable evidence that it really exists.... and then you question it some more. Never accept something as the truth until you do your own research....
