I'm not sure if it works for anyone else, but in my experience people are still struggling. I know a lot of people who have been on the program and have gotten low paying jobs and they cut the food stamp benefits in half and those people still have to struggle from paycheck to paycheck...trying to find a decent place to live to raise their kids with good schools and also trying to keep them fed. And with the raise in natural gas prices forget about heating your home in the winter. I really don't think there is a solution to this problem.

There will be rich and poor no matter what. If the welfare teaches them to get a job. The pay will be more than the $87.00 a month per child. But the depression of working many hours for little pay will be depressing. I don't know the answer.. But thanks for the points.

As with most assistance programs - if the person wants help - then the assistance program can help. The program can get them started, and frequently, at any level, all we need is a little help in the right direction.

help them do what?

what's the history of their situation?

I don't want to help people make more babies.
I don't want to help people enjoy cigarettes and booze.
I don't want to help people enjoy cabel tv, cd's, cd players, computers, designer clothes, trips to nail shops and beauty parlors, and that sort of thing.
I don't want to help people go to movies, the malls, amuzement parks, and the like.

There's a big difference between offering aid to grandma, grandpa, the widow, the widower, the orphans, and even to the mentally retarded (no offense intended) and throwing away money to able bodied people who will not change their living habits and who continue to take advantage of "the system."

have you ever heard the expression "you can lead a horse to water, but you can't make him drink"?
this is true of welfare. some people will use the money to better themselves. some will use it to continue their inertia.

at least the money we give them allows them the option
