cut the grass as short as you can, or pull it out, lay down 5-7 layers of newspaper, and mulch over that. The newspaper will act like a landscape fabric, and by time it decays, the weeds will be dead , and not grow back thru your mulch. Remember that you will need 3-4 inches of mulch.

Unfortunately there is no selective herbicide that will safely remove weeds out of flower beds without harming the plants you want to keep.
The sure fire way to remove those is to hand pull them. Maybe have your kids go out there and do it, if you trust them. Another option... if your plant bed is ever empty of your flowering plants, spray roundup or other herbicide before you plant anything, then put mulch down to keep weeds under control.
A tip from one of the professors I had was to go around with whatever herbicide you have and use a brush or something to 'paint' on the herbicide being careful not to touch the 'good' plants! This may seem tedious, but it's either that or hand pull them!

Pull them out by using the roots. Then, mulch the soil round your flowers so as that not some thing else can boost there - bark works for this. careful with chemical substances - they're going to damage your flowers merely as a lot as they damage the weeds.

Good question, I have that same problem. Weed eater sounds the most obvious, although I don't have one. I do have some shears used to cut chicken skin etc.......works but it's time consuming.
