You need to define both freeware and high price for a better answer. Open source software assumes a certain level of expertise. Get a book and learn.

Are you being philosophical? Freeware is free. But if it comes bundled with spyware that spies on you - or worse - you could well end up paying a price.

assuming 'high price' you are referring to:
no support
dead projects
crawls to shareware

many projects start from savvy techies then they either create good enough software to charge for or focus on their employment


However, OPEN SOURCE is a community based and is not dependent on an individual. Mostly developed by groups of indivduals. Projects continue as long as people download and other developers contribute.
