Its called 'heat' or 'cycle' in animals, and it varies between species.
For some animals like rabbits and cats, they come in heat and are ready to mate at regular intervals; but ovulation is only triggered by a succesful mating.
For others like horses and lions they come into heat regularly once a month during the breeding season, and again shortly after the offspring are born.
Wolves come into heat about once a year, domestic dogs every 6 months or once a year.

Its called estrus, female mammals do have this and yes it varies. Estrus for a human 28-35 days. For a mouse 4-5 days. Not every mammal as a "period" though.

Yes, many female animals get it, it is usually refered to as being in heat though. The concept is the same, the only difference would be the frequency and duration.

Certainly does. My dog gets it... although it's not every month. She probably gets it about 3 times a year for about 1 and a half weeks each time. I'm not sure whether this is a normal thing for dogs but she is healthy and it has been this routine way since she matured from a puppy.

Yea, my bro's girly boxer came to stay before she'd been 'done' and we had to put a pair of knickers on her because she was dripping everywhere. Poor thing kept thinking she'd done something wrong and looked worried when all these spots were appearing on the floor.
