Of course, it depends on your aims and objectives. For the usual transactions necessary for tourists and business travel, Breakthrough Arabic is a good, fast and effective course.

If you want a course that teaches literary Arabic using the Arabic alphabet, the most effective book is "Towards Understanding Qur'anic Arabic" by Dr M.I.H.I Surty of Birmingham University available from the Quranic Arabic Foundation, telephone number 0121-766 8577. I have found it a fast and effective course and my Arab friends are tremendously happy that I can read parts of the Qur'an and read and write. However, it does require an understanding of grammar if you are teaching yourself.

I am sure, as the lady above suggests, you will also be given every help at a mosque as almost all mosques organise Arabic lessons for children and adults.

If you have satellite TV, there are many free channels on Hotbird. There are films, talk shows, soaps and hilarious comedies - all in Arabic and all free. You can pick up a lot from TV.

I wish you well. Arabic literature is an ocean and well worth the effort. And the Qur'an is the very highest form of the language.

The best place to learn Arabic is in a Mosque. The Imams and other teachers can teach you Arabic quite quickly.
