While that may be a valid definition for "Freethinker", I don't happen to think of that definition when I think of "free thinkers." I think of people who are capable of independently assembling data, drawing conclusions, and making decisions and choices based on their understanding of the information they have gathered. Since our representative government seems to have evolved to one of professional politicians, I find it unlikely that our representatives to that government are entirely free to think independently at all. I doubt the information they gather is even chosen by that representative. I know they have "readers" who read the bills as they come up and comment on the value of the bill and recommend changes. I know the representative rarely researches a bill and probably pays little attention except to bring up pet projects he/she feels newsworthy.

"Freethinkers" -- maybe.
"free thinkers" -- I seriously doubt it.

Delusional superstitionism (religion) is, unfortunately, the norm, so it is hard to estimate how many freethinkers there are in government because they have to hide that fact. It is like an intelligent woman having to play dumb to attract males, also unfortunate.

There aren't any. Some states outright forbid atheists and humanists, for example, to hold public office.

There has only been one atheist (lawyer) who ran for public office (assembly seat) and that was in L.A. in 2000. Unfortunately he was defeated in the primary.
