The first successful space mission was Sputnik I. The USSR sent up the first form of spacecraft in October of 1957. This caused the Americans to panic and have to play catch-up. If the Russians could send something into space, they would be able to use that technology in their nuclear programs. A scary thought at the time as the Cold War was reaching its peak.

It depends on the first world wide, or the first American. The very first object to orbit in space was the Russian "Sputnik". this took place in October of either 1957 o4 1958.
