My sister-in-law is an Aussie and she and my brother are actually live in Melbourne right now. I visited in March of 2005 (only a few months after the U.S. presidental election) and I caught quite a bit of flack. Mostly it was lighthearted teasing but I ran across a few people that genuinely seem like they wanted to take it out on me like I voted for the idiot. Oddly enough, it was after a night of drinking and we were craving a good ol' greasy American burger and we were sitting outside of a Mackers (McD's) and were approached by a group of guys. On more than one occassion I found myself saying, "I promise we are not all like that."---I can be joked with and dish it back out all in good fun so it wasn't a problem. All of my brother's mates were very nice though and offered to take us out to lunch or for a drink and show us around. Someone else mentioned that most Aussies are very knowledgeable about culture and history and I agree. The older generations could explain the complete history about a random crack in a sidewalk and make in an interesting story and from my experience, they were very hospitable. Everyone was laid back, the young and old all seem to work hard and play hard. As with any other place, there can be jerks too...but my personal experiences overall were very positive.

Australians are viewed world wide as nice friendly and laid back people, which of course they are!
We currently live in Adelaide and apart from the odd exception, everyone is VERY friendly, and they go out of their way to be helpful if they can.
e.g. In the UK if someone was running for a bus and the bus driver could stop, he wont, he will just drive away and laugh, leaving the person to wait until another bus comes along.
In Australia, the bus drivers are VERY helpful and friendly and are nice to the passengers. That is only one observation.

I think that Australians are great! My wife's parents moved from Japan to Carnies Australia and thy have been their for 13 years.
My wife and I live in the US and we visited them for two months and know we are planing to move there too.
I've lived in the states my hole life but traveled all over the world and I think the Australians are kind and vary family oriented and not a bought the cars thy drive and the close thy ware.
Australia is were I want my kids to grow up.

I've only met a few, all men, personally. The men I met all think they're God's gift to women...luckily, I didn't see the memo from God. Once you got passed that, they were nice guys. Weird sense of humor, but that's okay.
I did "meet" a couple women through a chat, and they seemed like nice people.
I'm going to guess that Australians, like everyone else, come in two types....ones that I'd like...and ones that I wouldn't like.

Yes, since Australians travel a lot they seem to appreciate history and other cultures, but also realize ho lucky they are as well.

I think Australians are great. The Outback is my favorite restaurant. The Melbourne (porterhouse) is great and so is the Bloomin' Onion.
