My friend had a leap procedure (partial cervix removal)done and is wondering if she will have complications with her pregnancy. Does anyone know if its harder to concieve or to carry a baby without miscarriage?

i think you are talking about LEEP for CIN.

It is not harder for a woman who has had a LEEP done to conceive. However, when she is pregnant, she may have complications.

The first complication is that of cervical incompetence whereby the cervix is not strong enough to hold the pregnancy till full term. In such a case, she may suffer a mid trimester miscarriage. If there is any sign of cervical incompetence, she may need a cervical cerclage which involves putting a stitch around the cervix to help to support the pregnancy.

The second complication is the other extreme whereby the cervix does not dilate well during labour due to scarring of the cervix. In such a scenario, she may need a caesarean section to deliver the baby.

I have had two Leep procedures before and am 18 weeks- I go into the doctor in two weeks and the told me when they do the ultrasound they can check the cervix for thinning. If it is thin they can stitch it closed so to speak in order to keep the cervix from opening up prematurely. The only other problem the doc said that I may encounter is that my cervix may not dilate properly when I go into labor and the answer to that of course is a C section.

I didn't have any problems conceiving at all.

Hope that helps.

I had one done back in 1999, and I carried two children to term. My gyn did a leep because it removes less cervical tissue than having a full conization, and makes it more likely for you to carry children. It didnt weaken my cervix at all. In fact, my ob/gyn said women who have leeps done generally have a hard time dilating because of the scar tissue (if any). I was worried about having to have a cerclage, etc.

Two of my babies came after my leep - no problems. I made sure to mention it to my OB so they could watch for cervical incompetence, but I had no issues concieving or carrying the babies because of it.

I know someone who had that done and had 3 children afterwards. I am not sure if they had trouble conceiving or not BUT they still had the kids within 6 years.
