Brasil has for such a long time had the best footballing talent, and they were favourites to win this world cup. Can someone offer a more in depth reason why they played such bad football other than reasons such as;
The players are old (because it was not just the old players who played badly)
S.American teams dont do well in EUropean World cups (because i know its true statistically, but surely a good enough team shud be able to break that curse)

I liked Timo's answer a lot. THe burnt out reason could be very true. I think a lot of players didnt look like their usual selves in this world cup, e.g. the whole ENgland team, e.g.2 Lampard who is usually a great goalscorer had the most shots off target at one point, maybe it is still him who has that honour, im not sure.
I disagree about Ronaldinho tho, i think he did have a bad world cup. I mean, i didnt expect him to score a lot, and he didnt necessarily have to make a lot of assists, however BRasil did not look dangerous in general, and Ronaldinho was the guy you were looking to to make the teams attacks more dangerous. Also, is there were a couple of guys on him all the time, the team woul dhave benefited greatly becos others would be able to play and have more space to create opportunities.

I would have to say that the footballer these days play far too much football during the year, so now when it comes to tournaments such as the world cup, they are burn't out and therefore cannot perform very well.
As for S.American teams not doing well in EU World Cups, that doesn't really mean much as football predictions cannot be accurately predicted because of all the variables involved...(age, fitness levels, psychological conditions, weather, morale...etc)
Why did Ronaldinho have a bad world cup? He actually didn't have a bad world cup. Football is not about only scoring goals. Ronaldinho is a play-maker. He had a considerable effect on every game that Brasil played. One of the reasons why he didn't shine in this world cup is because all the other teams knew exactly how to protect themselves from Ronaldinho.
If you examine the games that were played, Ronaldinho always had multiple players surrounding him whenever he had the ball.
Thats just my humble opinion. Use it, don't use it...its up to you.

It may be simplistic but the fault really has to rest with the manager, Parreira. He didn't figure his team out and get the best out of them in the way that Scolari got the most out of Portugal. And yet I thought that Parreira had the answer in his hands. When he put Robinho on in the game against Australia, that move not only changed the way the whole team played but it made Ronaldinho happy. It was the only time in the tournament that I thought Ronaldinho looked himself.

Lasts editions they had a team, really. Now they all play for themselves, they do not form a team at all. They all want to score,... We also got to acknowledge only Kaka was in form in this team. The likes as Ronaldinho, Ronaldo, Adriano and so on weren't at all. France put big pressure on them and it worked.

Because of over confidence. the samba team had only 2 warm up games b4 the WC, they thought they w'd get themselves warmed up in the league games but their forward didn't got into full flow and there was no co-ordination among their players. This led to the mismarking of Henry against Brazil, they let the most dangerous French striker unmarked and had to face the consequences.

well, I think they did bad just because of the pressure. People were making fun of ronaldo saying he was out of shape and everyone was watching ronaldinho to see some sick moves and i think it got to them.
