Please only give legitimate answers and I don't need preached to. My ex cheated on me, left me, sued for custody, then left the state, I hardly see my son and I still have to pay child support, I've tried lawyers and they want more money than I can afford. Could I relinquish my rights as a parent and stop this insanity?

Guys listen, I'm sorry, but there are reasons I need to do this and it's not that I want to, but she moved out of state w/out any consent, no one is doing anything and I haven't seen my so for 8 months. I'm basically paying her to get rid of him. There is more to it than that even, so don't make me sound like I'm the jerk here, unless you really know what's going on I don't feel like you have any right to judge me, and besides I asked for legitimate answers to my question, not a bunch of people making me feel worse than I already do. By the way I hardly make any money and I pay child support, I've kept my job the whole time trying to do the right thing, I even payed off the 1347.00 that she owed on an apartment that I reluctantly co-signed for. Please be nice, I'm only asking.

Contact your state bar association for lawyers.
Every state has attorneys who do Pro Bono work. (free cases).
You really NEED this help.
If you relinquish your parental rights, how would your child feel years from now? You have to think what it would do to him.
You also have the right to show up at court if you quit paying child support on your own and explain to the Judge why you aren't paying it anymore. (not seeing your child).
If you give up your rights to your son, you will only hurt HIM in the end.

To the best of my knowledge you can agree to your ex having full custody, but child support continues until another man adopts the child, while the child is still a minor. If the child is over 18 and chooses to go to college, you will also be liable to pay CS throughout a 4 year undergrad. program.

There's excellent info on this topic at divorcesource.com

Are you asking if by surrendering your parental rights you will no longer have to pay child support? Sorry but it doesn't work that way. The courts are suppose to be taking the welfare of the child into consideration first. If every father or mother who didn't want to pay support could simply drop his or her claim to parental rights, there would be 100,000's kids in worst financial shape then they currently are. I was lucky in my divorce, I took custody of our son and my ex was required to pay support. Never saw it all, but I didn't care. Good luck and do check out the father's rights website.

You can relinquish your rights, but you cannot stop paying child support, unless your child is adopted by another, more worthwhile dad.
