I have heard convincing arguments for both manufacturers. I do know that if either were bad, they would be out of business quickly. In my opinion, the important item to look at is the entire chip-set, and the one that is best is the one that does what you specifically want.
I hope this helps.

I would chose AMD its the bang for the buck as almost everyone thats going for AMD is saying (in the last few questions i've seen)
And no i am not just an AMD person, i am an AMD person that use to be an Intel person. yes, just 1 single cheap processor changed my mind.
Intel's heat dissipation on the CPU is so crappy. i had a 3.2ghz Prescott and i needed to underclock it to 3ghz just to stop it from overheating.
Now, my overclocked AMD FX-57 doesn't even touch the idle temp of the Intel while my FX-57 is under maximum load!
and my 57 is 3ghz, my 3.2ghz Intel was about 1/2 the speed of my AMD. SOOOO MUCH BETTER!!!!
If you pick AMD, you won't be dissapointed

In general building a computer based on an AMD processor will cost you less that an Intel machine of the same power. You get more power for the same price in other words.
As far as software goes modern programs run just as well on both processors.
I build/service computers for a living, almost all are AMD based.

Witch is good. Its a personal opinion. I think they are great for the society. Infact, they should be authorized to manufacture flying brooms so we can all have personal jets.
intel or amd. I think AMD is better because of the competitive pricing of their processors. Also, I am again companies that try to monopolize the market.

For gaming - pick an AMD chip and if all you want is to watch movies, edit video, run Autocad or 3D Stidio Max - then the Intel chip surpasses AMD.
I'm running an Intel chip in my rig and I play games, but the differerce is minimal - price is also a factor - Intel is more expensive.
Your choice - depends what you want your computer to do.

I've used both.
Intel chips are ok but they can be a bit sluggish at times.
AMD on the other hand seem to be very good.
In every computer I've used so far I've used an AMD Socket A processor - Never had any problems with any of them.
