I've had unusual things happen such as small annoying changes made and deletions of many documents and files that I use to use working for a former company. At first I didn't give it much thought, until I realized that almost all of my work was gone! Disappeared! Then I began to remember how my former boss (owner of a large company) was obsessed about being able to find a way to hack into his competitions information on their computers. He often commented that if he had access to their computers, he could probably find something to use against them to run them out of business. Money is no issue with this man and he will (and does) go to extremes to do this sort of thing.
Is this illegal?
And, what can a person do if they were to find he's doing this?

This is ACTUAL theft and , if you have enough evidence , you can take him to court. If you have a firewall like Sygate then it will show attack profiles and the IP addresses of those trying to break in.For now , take your computer off-line ( no network connection) and allocate new and different passwords to your sensitive files and directories. When you are back on-line again ( On windows) look at the event viewer , eventvwr.exe an dlook at the secuirty log. this will show you attempts at trying to break in to those files. You can also set up alerts which will warn you when this is happening.
Also, you can use the utility tracert.exe which will track back connections to suspect IP addresses. The names of the sites will be shown which may give you a clue ( or evidence) on who is doing it.Good Luck.

Hi. The first thing that you've got to define, is whether the files that are missing are spread across all your system files, or only specific areas, such as relating to your former employer. Also, you've got to check whehter you have a standard firewall up. You do not mention which computer platform you're working on, but Microsoft Windows is assumed. It is pretty advanced to only delete certain things and have minor deletions made, so it might also just be a normal system fault, if the deletions and losses are more general. If you are not technically minded, it might be the best option to get a 'techie' to have a look at your system and advise you on site. And yes, hacking is illegal in nearly all countries, and amounts to the same penalties as any other crime, if guilt can be proven. What can you do? I would advise getting proof and going to your local authorities.

Of course hacking is illegal.

Get yourself a firewall. That always does the trick.

And store the documents somewhere else.

And if your boss admitted to hacking then report him to the police so that they can trace him and his illegal activities.
