Start running better fuel. Put thicker oil in or add and additive. Make sure it is not an exhaust leak, sometimes exhaust will tick when there is a small leak. Hope I have been helpful.

a 97 626 has hydraulic lashers if on a cold start after sitting a day or more Mazda says it is normal to hear clicking sound for several minutes if it never stops and oil pressure and flow volume are within specs [strainer clean, oil pump good ,proper bearing clearances] than lashers should be replaced. this car is 10 model years old now. has this engine been properly serviced? has it been ragged out? are you the original owner or know the complete service history? you may be opening up a can of worms, especially if you are driving a portable asphalt factory.

As long as it is safe to drive,You should have a good mechanic listen to the sound and then go from there.

Sometimes there is a tapping noise which is the tappets/hydraulic lifters. This can also be affected by the oil level, how old the oil is, if the car has had poor servicing.

If the knock is more a heavier clunk it could be the engine bearings.

If it's the valves rather than the fuel injectors making the clicking noise you hear, try a Mobil One synthetic oil change also.
