I have been a professional non profit fundraiser for years, and often wonder what types of worthy causes most people would donate to if they were so inclined, and why? Gates and Buffet recently chose disease erradication and education. If you had their money what would you do and why?

Each person has his own list of causes he supports. Like most people, my first choice is almost always going to be something that affects me in my life and that I believe in. Other than that, I will usually look to see if the charity benefits children as a direct goal, and see how well the charity is managed. I almost always stay away from religious charities, especially if they are from a different religion than me.

I don't have their money but I do give what i can to charity whenever I can. It's small amounts every so often or may be in kind. I mainly give to orphans, families who need extra support for schooling, poverty, and building of schools. If I had the money Gates and Buffet had, I would have distributed it to all these but perhaps much more to orphans. I think I would prefer ( if i was rich!) to leave a sum of money in each child's name so when they reach a certain age they can use it toward's starting their life outside the orphanage for further education. Education opens doors and is the first step towards a secure life.

That's a terribly difficult question to answer as we're all so suspicious of 'fund raisers' these days, with good cause (if you'll pardon the pun) in a lot of cases. With respect, you yourself have no history on this board that could verify your status.

Personally I do and would continue to give to small local charities as the national/international ones are (in my opinion only)becoming far too political. If I had the money my ideal would be to set up three, one for battered wives/children, one for alcoholics going into recovery and one a pet rescue, all overcrowded at this time and all subjects close to my heart.
