The purpose of PCR is to amplify a small amount of DNA to obtain enough to do whatever is desired with the sample. In the lab We used PCR to identify certain bacterial infections in cells transmitted by parasites, also to do DNA sequencing. Theoretically it only takes one copy (template) of DNA to produce amplified product. One copy passed thru several cycles will give millions of copies. However each strand in the template will do the same, so the more copies going thru the process will result in more product.

You would perfrom a polymerase chain reaction only if you do not have enough genetic material to test, so therefore you replicate it efficiently and quickly. If you have excess template, if i know what your asking, you will simply produce more product.
