There are lots of other species where the babies are even more helpless (Born blind, deaf and hairless). Part of the reason is because of the way humans are, we walk on two feet which requires a different way of balancing, and as already mentioned, the development of the head. If babies came out any older, they would be too big to pass through the opening. Of course I'm no expert, but this is my opinion.

Because humans have larger brains - and therefore heads- compared to other species, human babies are born in an earlier phase of development than the others, because when they are old enough to rech that stage of development their head would be too big to pass from their mother's opening.

Just wanna say I totally agree with Joanne. Also, consider how long our life span is compared to other animals. So, when a puppy is 3 or 4 months old, he/she is really better compared to a 4 or 5 year old considering how long they live in total.

How do we know they are ?
We need to release babies into the wild and see how they cope with the real world, stop treating them like babies, its not natural.
