Depends on if you've had other jobs normally Id ask my boss or maybe a teacher from school usually the head of year or headmaster, failing that ask your neighbours or something like that as long as they have known you a while it will be fine (Usually 3 or more years).

When trying to get a reference, try to think of what the person reading it will think.
It is all well and good getting a member of your family or a friend to give you a reference after all they are the ones who know you best but from an employers point of view that may not be a good thing.
Going for the likes of teachers you have had or bosses in previous jobs are always better bets as they are the ones who will be able to tell the employer things like how your time keeping is etc (which is slightly more important than how 'good' a person your mates think you are. lol.
If you chose to go for an ex teacher think about relevancy, for example if you are applying for a course at uni which involves English it is better to get a reference from your ex English teacher rather than a Maths one.
Also good for references are people who are high up in their company, perhaps somebody one of your parents knows who is something like a local politician or director of a company, this always adds a bit of kudos to the reference.

Hope this helps.

I suppose it would depend on what the reference is for. A friend of mine recently wrote one for me, and I have known her for six years. We used to work together in the telecommunications industry. I suppose a friend you have known for a long time would work, but if it is for employment purposes, then I would suggest a friend that you work with, or used to work with that could give you a good reference without any unneeded bias.

If you have a Pastor, that always looks good, a boss if you have been @ a job for a while, and then just long time friends and family.

i assume you mean testimonials for a prospective employer or other opportunity?

i suggest former employers, well-known coworkers, the priest/pastor/rabbi if you are active in a religious organization... someone who would know your morals / work ethic / temperment well but who is also a figue of authority.
