Yes! You can get dehydrated while swimming. Many swimmers who swim on teams or for exercises/ swim laps they will do almost two miles just to get warmed up. One of my mentees swims everyday during off season and twice a day during competitive seasons. He burns over 7000 calories a day during that time. A good diet and plenty of water prior and after swimming is important. The sun and chlorine can dry out your skin and hair so showering off the chorine using high SPF sunscreen and drinking plenty of water as well as eating well can help fend off dehydration of the internal body, skin and hair. Swimming is a good life long sports if you don’t currently swim try it.

Ideally you're supposed to drink 1 large bottle of water for every hour in the pool

yes of course. even though you are IN the water doesn't mean you are drinking. just like any other sport you are losing fluids from your body. so, when you are doing a swim workout, always drink fluids.

not as long as you drink the pool water occasionally while swimming...however it's not recommended due to the chemicals....just drink liquids before swimming and have a bottle of water waiting poolside.
