OK I was complaining about how smut pervades the airwaves but I admit I like South Park. It's ironic, satirical, intelligent and funny. However, kids should NOT be watching it. Kids (and even some adults) cannot detect irony so they still get morally corrupted. It's pretty naive for people to assume that just because it's on at night that kids won't see it, kids as young as 8 even. While I think it should be the parents' job to make sure that kids don't watch it, too many parents aren't doing their jobs, so...? What do you think?

So, mia_violenza, what's the better approach then, the "shoot your little boy's hamster" approach?

If someone has a problem with it, don't watch it. Block the channel for kids. And like you said, some parents don't do "their job" but just because of them, everyone else - who likes south park- shouldn't be affected. So if parents can't control their kids and them complain about the media, that's their problem.

Yes, because there is a thing called "parental controls" that comes with cable and satellite TV, and most TVs today have a V-chip. It is the parents' responsibility to learn how to use these things and then use them, even if it means (gasp!) taking time from their busy careers and social lives and spending some time on their children.

And the bible is full of murder, adultery, etc. Should children be banned from reading it?

Yes, South Park should be allowed on the air. You answered your question in your question, it is the parent's responsibility. You can not deny freedom of expression solely on the basis of a minority of parents that fail their kids. That's like an atheist saying that Sunday church services should not be allowed on the air because they influence their children. I know that is extreme, but it is the complete opposite of the spectrum. Outlawing shows like South Park will only lead to further infringements on the freedom of expression.

I am not a big fan of censorship so I say leave it on the air. I personally have never watched more than 5 minutes of the show in all the years it has been on. When my son was young I restricted him from watching...OK, parental censorship but we raise our children with our own values. When he became older I let him decide for himself if he wanted to watch the show.

It is intended for mature audiences. A standard V-chip can be used to block out programming that is not suitable for younger viewers, like late night Comedy Central. There 'Girls Gone Wild' commercials at night border on pornography. I like porn, but I wouldn't want my kids watching that.

I've never understood the concept of denying children of anything "evil" until they one day stumble upon it themselves and become obsessed with it. Parents who use the "don't ask silly questions" approach to child-rearing ought to prepare themselves for rebellious and/or psychotic children. Deny a child of something, and they only want it more, or hate you for it. It breeds disrespect and a false sense of reality. The world is full of terrible things. Stop trying to pretend that your child will never be exposed to them. Help them be prepared for it.
