First, start with Healthy Body Calculator to determine how many calories you need to gain 1 or 2 pounds per week. Then using Your Nutrition Facts as a guide, write down how much and what foods you eat so you know whether or not you are eating enough food.
Generally to gain weight, you need more of everything, more milk, starches, fruits and vegetables. Temper all this with some added fats, oils and sweets. You can use the Food Guide Pyramid as a guide to the number of servings. The basic guide contains 2000 - 2500 calories. You might also want to include 2 or 3 snacks between meals since you will probably feel full after larger meals.
Do you exercise? If not, start a program that includes weight training and aerobic exercise. If you are going to gain weight, why not make it muscle rather than fat.

My suggestion is simple. Eat foods with high amounts of protein. Any kinds of nuts, egg whites, and if you do eat this- try fish. High amounts of protein combined with general exercise will actual cause your body to go into overdrive, increasing your metabolism. Fear not, though. Yes you may start to lose weight, but only slightly. Your body will then compensate and learn to store the protein as muscle and proportionately place fatty cells around your body. In the end, you'll gain your weight and keep a fabulous bod at the same time. This is what I had to do!! It WORKS!!!!

I've read that a lot of vegetarians don't get enough protein in their diets. You need protein to build muscle. If you don't want to eat meats then you should increase your intake of soy products and/or nuts. Do you eat fish and seafood? Strength training will give you muscle definition. You may also benefit from from adding a bit more fat to your diet. Everyone needs SOME fat in order for their bodies to function properly. Healthy fats like olive oil and peanut oil, etc.

Junk food is not the answer..... your body may need more proteins since your a vegetarian......also Smoothies can really pack on the pounds... it's all fruit....& their good for you, full of natural sugars.... also add some extra carbs to your diet.... As you get older you will put it on easier also...add an extra 1000 to 1200 calories to your diet everyday and you should put on some weight..... good luck sweetie....
