I would always have said that the rules of chess were something that were not debatable , now look at these answers!
Perhaps you should have asked "What are the rules"
The rules are white moves first.
It really is amazing all these answers, perhaps your next question should be how many squares on a chess board? That will really throw the cat among the pigeons!

Just to be different black, maybe some where out there black move first for once I hate whites starting because im always the black one.

The rules of chess are quite specific - it's white. However, that only matters if you care about the rules.
