the only way we could survive that one would be to either live underground or have a very large magnetec device to repel the astroids. a strong enough magnet can even repel water. we may be able to alter the earths magnetic field with powerful magnets to repel the astroids untill the earth left the belt.

Probably nothing would happen, The asteroid belt isn't like what you see on star wars with huge rocks every 20 feet. Its very sparsely populated with asteroids. and don't forget, they are all orbiting the sun at a set speed, just like the earth. If the earth were in the same orbit as the asteroid belt the impacts (if any happened of consequence) would not be at the fantastic speeds that occur during meteor showers that we see at night.

(edit)

The Jist of your question hints at what would the asteroids do to the surface of the planet. Even If we got pelted by hundreds of house sized rocks it would be a minor inconvenience compared to the fantastically cold environment that the earth would turn into. OR.. if the earth was passing through the asteroid belt on its way to somewhere else in the outer solar system the problems to the planet would be even worse.

We would probably get hit by one or two small asteroids. I think that everyone else is thinking that we are going to get hit every second but the asteroids are pretty far apart.
