breathing. Whenever i turn my head to come up for air, I am afraid of swallowing water. Is there any advice you can give me. Sorry, I don't know the name of the stroke, but it's just the basic swim stroke where you swim with your head underwater for a few strokes, and then turn your head out of the water for air.

The most difficult part about learning to swim is you are never able to see what you look like while swimming. You may feel your body is in a particular position but if you were to video yourself you would see something completely different. Get a coach or have someone vide tape you swimming. Then work on improving your stroke from there.

It is great that you are trying to learn how to swim on your own. But, how do you know that you are doing the stroke correctly. Often the way that a stroke feels is not necessarily mean it is being done correctly.

It sounds like you are doing the Australian crawl or freestyle. If you are doing the stroke correctly you will turn you head and chin towards your arm pit and roll slightly on the opposite side that you are breathing. There will be a small pocket of air that will form there. It takes awhile and some practice.

If you truly believe that your stroke is fair. You might want to dig up someone who can spend some time with you on a private lesson. Should only take or two lessons. Or go to the local YMCA and sign up for lessons. You'll become a better swimmer if you do.

Make sure you breath out when your head is under water. When you take a breath you move your head to the side as your arm goes up and breath in through your mouth (not nose). The cool thing is that even if your mouth is slightly in the water, your body will still pull in the air. Don't be afraid of swallowing water. Every swimmer does it occasionally.

1st of all, im just going to start by saying, its better if you take lessons from someone who knows what their doing. they can show you these tricks.

ill try to explain the best i can though, im guessing by the "basic stroke" you mean freestyle so thats what ill explain:

push off the wall with your hands in streamline ( this means both your hands are above your head in a point, one on top of the other and over your ears), then start kicking. after a few seconds of this you start your strokes, reaching with one hand almost as far as you can and PULLING water underneath you when you pull back. try to keep a steady body roll while doing this which lets you reach further. for breathing, you should try to breath in a pattern, like every 4. when one hand is streching, you lean you head the opposite way on top of that arm on your side. do not stop kicking/stroking. if you breathe out a little before breathing it will be harder for you to swallow water.

good luck!!!

You can go to;

www.usaswimmingstore.com
www.swimmingcoach.org

They have books and videos and some website information. They will let you know where your local swimming associations located. They usually have stroke schools at local pools to help you learn or improve your strokes. If you can not or they have no outlet in your area then go to your local library and request swimming book published by USA Swimming org

Freestyle. I'm a swimmer, and i have swallowed plenty of water. The main thing is to just try it and practice. The breathing is one of the most important parts because it can really affect your speed. You'll get it eventually.

I taught both one among my children. i imagine the foremost to them attending to comprehend is the quantity of publicity they ought to water. on the early years merely deliver them like your wondering about. even as they are somewhat older, take them for training in case you imagine they choose them. maximum children that spend a variety of of time in and around the water, do not choose training.
