Think Richard the Lion Hearted. Prince john tried to usurp his thrown. Fredo tried the same thing with Michael. Generally, you get your head chopped out for that. From a mafia stand point, Michael is a Don, Fredo's Don and you never mess with the Don.
If you do all of the made men in his service are duty bound to kill you. And what about the other made men? If he didn't kill Fredo then that would mean he was weak, indecisive and vulnerable to his friends and family. "Keep your friends close and your eenemies closer." Fredo had to die. It was the Machiavellian way.

yes. Had he not had him killed if would have sent a message to his enemies that Don Corleone's weakness is his family and that he himself is a weak Don. By killing his own brother he showed that no traitors will be forgiven in the Corleone mafia family. Cold-blooded, but efficient. However, Michael will pay for his often harsh decisions in the final film of the trilogy.

No, Fredo is his brother no matter what he did, and he is from the family, he shoud have cast him away from the family business, maybe some day he will learn and be a wise man and come back to help michael some day. Just like his sister in part 3.

Yes... no... wait one... n-o-o... definitely no; whatever plot Fredo can hatch against Michael surely Don Corleone can find a way to deal with it without killing him. I thought 'blood was thicker than water' in their culture.

Fredo was weak, but if you kill your own family--- that message is not the epitome of strength.

Fredo was a traitor; traitors should be killed no matter what.
