Our tax money also goes on wars, subsidising weapons manufacturers, subsidising the rail networks (even though the profits go to private shareholders) and other things we wouldn't agree to if we had a choice. I'm assume you're from South Africa and somewhat peeved at paying tax but not having free healthcare? Well we pay for the NHS, but it's next to useless (horrendous waiting lists, unlcean hospitals, poor service), and even if we want to go private and pay for our own healthcare, there's no opt-out system. I realise there are many down-sides to a system with no healthcare (especially for the poor, of course) but I do resent the lack of choice - at least private healthcare means that there's some competition - if a private healthcare company doesn't do what you want, you can look elsewhere.
