The first idea this phrase gives to me is; Americans look at the whole world as business and possibly profit, and the only "thing" they can't really cheat or make deals with, they put their trust on, just to be on the safe side..

We don't trust anyone but a being we can't see smell or touch. Kinda misguided, but unfortunatly God is the only one that hasn't completely screwed us yet.
