None of these really answer your question, so I'll give it a shot. The simple answer about why the Pixies broke up after Trompe Le Monde is that Charles decided he didn't want to be in the Pixies anymore and broke up the band. As he says in last year's Pixies biography "Fool the World: The Oral History of a Band Called Pixies", "I wasn't happy, and I left" (Frank, 222). So the simple answer about why the Pixies broke up is that Charles wasn't happy being Black Francis anymore and decided to kill him to become Frank Black.
Beyond that, there's a lot of speculation about why he wasn't happy. These reasons have all been cited, in Fool the World and on multiple message boards since 1993:
*Tension between Charles and Kim, caused by personality conflicts, Kim's addictions and Frank's benevolent dictatorship of the group.
*Frank's disappointment with the lack of commercial success following the band's opening gigs with the Cure and U2
*Creative boredom, artistic differences and a desire by Frank and Kim to start fresh with new bands and new music
Hopefully that clears it up a bit. If you're really interested in this, I'd recommend you read Fool the World, or ask those in the know on Frankblack.net for more info.

Following the release and an uncomfortable tour supporting fans U2, the Pixies went on sabbatical and focused on separate projects. In early 1993, Francis announced on a radio interview that the band was finished, unbeknownst to the other members of the band.
