I will be staying an extra day in Japan after my business trip and I want to spend it for some sightseeing. Sightseeing with nearby shopping would be great!

Go to the Dahbutsu Shrine (Big Buddah) in Kamakura. About 1 hour and fiteen min by experss train. Lots of nice shopping and tourist collectables. Many nice places to eat just outside the shrine and cheap too. Only about a 10 min walk straight up the hill from the train station. Nice way to spend an afternoon evening especially when the cherry blossoms bloom in the spring.

Asakusa http://www.japan-guide.com/e/e3001.html
would fill an afternoon and also give you the opportunity to shop for souvenirs. I believe there's also a boat trip in that same area.

Chiba and Yokohama are a bit far for an afternoon.

Ginza, Roppongi, and Akihabara are also good options for shopping and site seeing.

You could take in some Kabuki theater in Ginza as well.

As others mentioned, you should describe your interests in
more detail, but in general Kamakura (many temples and
Daibutsu, also Enoshima is nice to visit) and Yokohama
(yoo many things to do and places to visit, like China Town,
the largetst one in Japan) are nice.

Yokohoma and Chiba are both near Tokyo and are easy to get to by train. They have a variety of big city life and nature.

Depends on what you want.
Decide first and then ask details again.
