I then realized the only reason I thought that was because it was a spider. That makes me a specieist (like a racist but with species). We should start a spider awareness program, make spider scholarships, and have spider history month. After all that is what we did with other groups we were prejudice against isn't it?

I've slung a little specieism in my day too, and let me tell ya, I felt none too good 'bout myself. We don't take the time to help the little fellers RELOCATE. We simply evict them with a death sentence. I spent 10 minutes trying to figure what to do with a daddylonglegs the other morning when I found him in my spare bathroom. I figured maybe, since he likes to hang around drains he could survive a little water torture and I ran a high pressured faucet down the drain with him for a minute. I'd be glad to make up the flyers, stickers, banners and t-shirt designs for our spider month awareness/history campaign. Change gonna' come soon.

No, the spider does not deserve to die. The spider is non agressive and will not attack unless in self defense or if it thinks it is prey. Spiders get a bad rap. I would much rather have an unsightly spider than buzzing clouds of gnats or flies in my house. The spider is an integral part of nature and controls the population of the real pests. If you are going to kill something kill the mosquitos.

Give yourself a break! Just apologize to the spider before killing it, say "I know you don't deserve this, but I have no other choice but to save myself and my family from your potential assault. Please forgive me for what I am about to do." And then squash it quickly, forgive yourself, and move on.

I think that since spiders actually can really harm humans and you don't know where they are in your house when you are sleeping, it is better to be safe than sorry. I don't think that the spider "deserves" to die, but I don't think that the spider's life is more important than my own safety and the safety of my family.

Well I'm one those folks that if it didn't bite me then okay. I just spent the last four hours chasing down a little garden snake that somehow made it into my house. I grabbed the little booger and moved him/her to my garden. He does serve a purpose and now my garden will be bug free. Spiders however are tougher to track down but when I do I just move them over to the lattice work around the garden and my mosquito and fly population are under control. So use nature for your own benefit and all works out well.

Who's WE in your comment about what WE did for the other groups?....The only group of species I can tell you who have awareness programs, scholarships and history months are "black" widows...and spiders who became enslaved and stolen from there own "webland" to be shipped to another land owned by "snakes" for about 500 years...then I think we could start an "awareness program" don't you =)

I always cackle "die! die! die!" when I smush spiders. It gives me a feeling of empowerment because it takes me so much courage to get close enough to the spider to actually kill it. Most of the time I make my roomate do it. They don't deserve to die, in fact I ought to appreciate them for eating all the smaller bugs, but I don't.

I don't think that it is accurate to say that the spider deserved to die. It is necessary for some animals to die because they are some place that they don't need to be. Like in your house.

yah i always feel the same way when i kill something. i know its bad because what did it do to me. like today i saw some mosquito looking thing flying above my pool while i was in it. so i splashed water and it fell into the water. i felt real bad and just left the pool.

then again a mosquito did just bite me. and this mornign i found out that they sprayed my neighborhood area with West nile thing because they found 10 dead birds in our city. soo maybe he had to die.

anyway yah i feel bad when i kill things. no its not prejudice if u kill everything. but you can. u only do it to those you dont like and you know you can kill. poor spider. but i hate them to so i ask others to do it for me

Now your thinking! As the "Future" draws closer we will need inclusion attitudes all over the world. The spider did not deserve to die...he was just looking for little bugs or water. Hewas not trying to harm you. In fact they only bite humans when they feel threatened (kinda like us?) But to be honest...they creep me out. I will work on my arachnaphobia thanks to you

Spiders and I have a long history together, and for the most part it's a "You leave me alone, I leave you alone" relationship. But if those little bastards set one foot on me, it had better be prepared to die.
