I have had the thought that maybe cutting down the rain forests and the fact that the ice is melting maybe are related. The earth needs more trees so it is making more land available. Or it needs more carbon dioxide so it is releasing some. I do believe the earth will fix itself whether we survive will be our choice. I hope we choose well. Who knows the earth is millions of years old have we been to this point before. If so we must have failed. What do you think?

Intersting ideas. :-)

Gaining land?:
Not according to my understanding. As the ice melts, sea levels will rise, reducing the amount of land. The polar ice caps are not going to offer up land to compensate for the loss everywhere else.

Carbon dioxide need:
The cutting and burning of forests (along with combustion of fossil fuels) is generating CO2. Melting the ice caps doesn't release more CO2, deforestation does.

I wouldn't say that the Earth will heal itself, so much as I would say that life that adapts to (or is already adapted to) the changes will survive, others will not.

If I recall correctly, over 95% of the species that have ever lived on Earth have already become extinct...which does not bode well for our chances, statistically speaking.

Happened before?:
If you mean, human-like civilization having happened before our current 4 million year run....there is no evidence to support that at this time.

What do I think?:
I think that humans will join the legions of other species that have died off.

:-p

I completly agree with you....a couple of weeks ago I watch this documentary about the new movie Algore has coming out....it really impacted me in the fact that it connect alot of the factor.....I think cutting down the rain forest, burning so much fossil fuel...ect... is what is causing all this horrible natrual disters...yea...the earth will renuratish it self...weather we survive is our choose, but if we chose to continue in the path that we are going down....it not going to be a fast and painless died....may will suffer for many years
i think we are to the point were we have reached the brigde we continue to movie forward with no change and also choose to continue distroying the earth......and one day it distroy us
or we choose to take a diffrent path....and slowly start renuritishing all that we have cause this earth to lose.....

We can only hope that the damage we have caused is reversable.

That said, it is true that the destruction of our rainforests has a major effect on the planets ability to process pollution.

it certainly is related son, because trees purify the area from harmful greenhouse gas CO2, less trees means more CO2 in the air.

We should plant a tree for each baby born. It is good that you put this on the agenda. more people should!
