Try controlled breathing. Regulate your breathing between 3 and 7 ( with 1 being the maximum you can inhale and 10 being the maximum you can exhale.) Breathe slowly at a steady controlled rate. If you cannot sleep because you have thoughts in your head and these continue during the controlled breathing, then tell your self a story that you know well. Little red Riding Hood or recount the Kings and Queens of England/ Presidents of the US.

I do this when I want to sleep and am not tired ( like when I am travelling in a new time zone ) I also use it when I am not well..at the very the first sign of a cold. It stops the cold in it's tracks. I sometimes leave a fan on in the room ( for the gentle hypnotic noise, not to cool the place ) I drift off into a state of semi conciousness and it feels fantastic. You will start to get a really nice feeling of well being almost like a drug. What I think happens is the controlled breathing stimulates the production of dopamine. I've recommended this to others and it works for them too ( they sometimes change some of the variables..one friend leaves the TV on low, another imagines redecorating her house)

I started this years ago when I had trouble sleeping as a student, but one of my indian friends says this is just a variation of a traditional yogic practice.

It may sound cranky but you have nothing to lose by trying it. It costs nothing and you do not need to put anything into your body. It may take a little practice.

do this before taking any meds (over the counter or otherwise) ... skip a days sleep go to bed an hour earlier the next night (just to make up a little from the night before)

some people are just anxious about something in their lives or for some reason have a little too much energy sometimes. these are not reasons to self medicate on things that can become habit forming and be bad for you in the long run.

Do not become dependant on something you dont need

Try doing a bit of really simple yoga. Sit cross-legged on a flat surface. Put your hands facing up/down on your knees, so you don't fidget. And you can sit with your back to a wall to ensure good posture. Breathe really slowly - inhale 6 counts, exhale 8 counts. (and repeat like mad of course) Calm down, (don't beat yourself up for not being able to fall asleep), go through anything that's keeping you awake in your head slowly. And if you're a Christian, end with a prayer. That SHOULD help you fall asleep. Hope you get to sleep soon, I know how terribly frustrating insomnia is!
