I believe people generally shy from discussions about politics, religion, and sex because those are topics which people are more likely to hold sacred and therefore take personally. Yes, in an academic atmosphere, discussions are meant to test the validity of opinions by subjecting them to peer review. However, the majority of the American population doesn't exist in an academic atmosphere, and therefore often times political, religious, and sexual ideologies are carried with a feeling of sanctity or personal privacy. When you challenge a person's sacred beliefs, in a sense you challenge what they believe to be their essence of being. When christianity is cast into doubt, the christian is without refuge, so to speak. I presume most people would prefer not to discuss those taboo topics rather than allow common "heathens" to draw such symbolic blood.

Because really the way a lot of people think it is just confrontation, like on here.
People are funny creatures, they find something nice that fits what they believe in and they accept it, even if they left the rest out! Usually on faith or some personal agenda level.
Of course people who make 100 million a year think they earned it, they just forget where it came from!
I am a pragmatist, but on the pessimistic side. I do that on purpose because I figure if everything was so hunky dory we would never have to do anything. We could go through life with our eyes open, being blind!

The purpose of most conversations is to find points to agree on. If you agree on a lot of stuff, that makes you friends!
In an academic setting, politics, religion, and sex aren't taboo because you're there to learn through discourse that can only come from a conflict of ideas.
How productive would an academic discussion be if everyone agreed on everything?

There's a reason your grandma says it's rude to talk about politics and religion at the dinner table - they involve passionate subjects with no absolute answers. You can argue them for an infinite amount of time and never find an answer. You're basically talking either to agree with or disagree with someone, for the sake of arguing or reinforcing your own views.

Separation of chuch and state has created the political religion of atheism which is not afraid to deal with politics but stays just on the fringe of religion and sex. It's all about being politically correct and fearing consequences that might affect one's reputation.

Not in this country! The U.S. still respects free speech except for a few seditious individuals. KEEP SPEAKING UP!
Here, I'll start: I totally disagree and think we should never talk about such things! (Just joking, but it would be protected by free speech).
We are strong enough to face each other and disagree, without name-calling, without spreading seditious rumors, without calling our elected officials names (not of this is patriotic, and some of it is seditious). We (the U.S. and other freedom-loving countries) are strong enough to take criticism and disagreement and come out stronger than before, perhaps by finding truth in our opponent's words. It has always made us stronger.

Many wars are started because of subjects like these. Many arguments and fights too. Problems at work happens because of them. There are always people who get upset or who don't want to work or associate with a certain type. If people want to discuss them civilly then fine. Otherwise it is better to let go.

yes u r absolutely right. but now people have started talking about such issues. But still people are afraid of talking on such matters. I agree with your reason and secondly these kind of discussions most often lead to the fights thatz why some people just don't take part in such discussions.

I agree with you. I think it is educational to talk about these subjects! Especially since everyone runs out of time nowadays, they dont' get to be "clued" in to the newest and latest information all the time. And isn't it better hearing it from a friend than from a T.V.?? !!!

certain, that is style of thoughtless to communicate about all 3 of those matters even as round people you do not understand ok. people have a tendency to type judgments about those who continually communicate about those "gentle" matters...that is authentic that your better 0.5's father will be nicely knowledgeable interior the arts AND etiquette so he would sense that he has a accurate to communicate on those themes each and each and every of the time. the actuality is, he will be knowledgeable, yet would lack tact or a strong "head-to-mouth clear out"---something like that can't learn at college or etiquette instructions... he might want to hit upon out on his own about how thoughtless a number of those conversations are with strangers.
