African teams don't often get to the final stages yet. I beleive it was when Cameroon reached the semis in 1990 that Pele said he thought an African team would win the trophy in the future.
I think it is inevitable that one day it will happen. However, as demonstrated by the experience of Togo this year with their money disputes and players threatening to not play, Africa does have certain issues that effect it more than European teams in its attempts to win the cup.

Yes, I believe that in my lifetime (I am young...I wont tell you how young because if I did you wouldnt respect my opinion{probably}) an African team will win the FIFA World Cup. I live in the United States (you probably wont respect my opinion because of that either, but I really hope you do, don't worry, I have been following soccer for years and I dont think the United States is god or anything...actually I kind of hate it), and our major sports, which dont include soccer(football), although they do still involve a lot of athleticism (mainly basketball, some positions in football(american) and baseball), are dominated by black athletes(african-americans). This is not to say that other ethnicities cannot have great athletes, its just that the greatest of the African athletes tend to be better than the greatest of other ethnicities. Evidence of this is all around. Look at running, a great indicator of athletisism (how does one spell that word?). Africans/African Americans don't just dominate a few events, but pretty much everything from the 100M to the 1600M to the Marathon. So we know that Africa tends to have the greatest athletes in the world. So, as far as soccer(football) goes, it is just about harnessing that talent and forming it a little bit. As of now, Africa just doesnt have the history in the sport that Europe and South America have. But they ARE catching up. Although this cup no African team made the quarterfinals, remember this cup is in Europe, where almost always Europe plays well and other continents do not (all Europe semifinals this cup). I think if an African team gets a really good coach, they could really stir things up in South Africa 2010. The talent is there. They just need it to be developed.

Football often changes. Taking a look back at the history of the World Cup, we see that once very strong teams lose unexpectely and once weak teams win unexpectedly. For example, Uruguay was a very strong country/ team in the mid 1900's and when won two World Cups but where are they now - they have not qualified for a World Cup in years! Another example is France. France never won a World Cup before '98 and prior to that they were considered a very inferior and weak team but look what happened - they won in '98 and it is quite possible that they will win in '06! As for African teams, I don't doubt that they will lift the Trophy eventually. African players are very intelligent, talented, and strong so it will just be a matter of time and proper teamwork and organization before an African country will win the World Cup. I, as a white European man, believe that an African nation will win the Trophy before the end of this century.

Pele made a comment saying that an African country will win the World Cup (I think either 1990 or 1994) within ten years of the tournaments. I think African teams will improve and if the players are brave enough to stick with the country of birth instead of playing for another country, African teams will improve. Hopefully it will be on African soil in 2010.

African states (black) have the best chance to win in S Africa 2010 for obvious reasons but will also be serious title contenders in future WC tournaments. They have been the most impressive 'new comers' to international football in recent history: excellent physique, superb skills, great stamina and pace are among their forte. Areas to improve could include game maturity, tactical knowledge, patience and of course an internationally proven coach to lead is vital to winning. On the opposite end, rice-eating Asia countries (barring Australia) are light years away from the level Africans have achieved.

ANYTHING is possible...That would be wonderful to witness such victory...At least, its a bit of a change from having to see the typical usual teams win the cup...The underdogs deserve a moment in the spotlight!!!

one day! when they stop shooting like they're playing rugby and start passing with a strategy instead of trying to dribble every player on the opposing team, twice before going for goal. They'll learn this from playing in europe, eg ivory coast had 10 of their 11starting players play in europe, the other was the keeper.
