In Indian culture, people shake their head from side to side to say ok. When listening, they do this to say yes I am listening to you and understanding you. When speaking it is to affirm what they are saying.

I have also noticed this with many Indian (from asia) people I know. It must definitely be a custom or cultural thing, but I don't know what the reason is either. Although not all Indians I know do it, maybe a specific region or caste?? I would love a reliable source to explain what the reason is...

From people who've been to that part of the world, I heard in their culture people are usually louder and more deomonstrative in conversation. It's just the way they learn to speak. And I heard in many east asian countries it's the opposite.

To get the listener's attention more easily ! Even TV anchors are seen doing it in a 'trained' manner because they 'know' we are looking at an 'Idiot Box', and our mind is likely to take a tour elsewhere in no time !

What kind of indian? (Amarican or asian) probably for the same reasons as Italians use thier hands

May be those doing so, would be observing the person from different angles to whom they are talking to and to know what kind of comunication/language is going well with him/her!
