Uhm there is so many options that one could go on for a while the simplest and easiest is to get a hosting service I have a Godaddy account that cost like $6 a month. That would be the easiest solution. If you want to host the server you will need a dedicated IP Address and most ISP charge $$$ for them and then you have to have a computer to act as the host with a some form of web server hosting software Apache, IIS etc.. All in all your going to spend a lot just to maintain and run the server, not to mention ISP fees etc. Most ISP will also charge you for additional bandwidth.

If you really want full control, you can run nearly everything on your own from your own house, apartment, whatever. All you need is an Internet connection. A static IP is preferable, but a dynamic IP is doable as well. (You get an IP from your ISP.)

Step 1: Register a domain. At most, this is $35/year, usually much cheaper. Go to networksolutions.com or any other domain registrar. When you register the domain, tell the registrar that your name servers are ns1.everydns.net and ns2.everydns.net.

Step 2: Go to everydns.net and create an account. Create DNS records for your domain. Your primary record should be an A record that directs your base domain (say mywebserver.com) to the IP address your ISP gave you. You will want to create other DNS records for robustness (like one for www.mywebserver.com).

Step 3: Get a PC with your favorite OS and server apps on it. Windows 2003 Server with IIS and SQL Server? Or Linux with Apache and MySQL. Your choice. Put it up in your house and make sure port 80 traffic gets forwarded to that machine from your router. (I'm making some assumptions about your home network set-up there.)

Done.

It's what I do... :-)

The best way to do this at an economical price is to pay for a virtual server account with an ISP. This probably precludes access to "sql server" as in microsoft sql server, but you can use either mysql or postgresql instead. With a virtual server, you have everything you need to host a site, and it's "dedicated" in the sense that you are running in a virtual server environment.

You can buy/download a bit of web server hosting software (try download.com) put it on a PC, load on a database hosting package and locate them infront of (or configure access through) your firewall. Use a Web page authoring tool (frontpage, dreamweaver etc) to develop and publish the page to your server.

Alternatively you can buy a box to do it all in one dedicated server, try something like an Eyebox (www.rightvision.com), is a few hundred pound but very very very easy to configure, run and includes the firewall, webserver and SQL server. I used it to great effect.

I do not ignore that information superhighway hosting vendors promote/employ dedicated servers yet a number of them are pre-configured. i'm searching for a container the position i am going to set up some thing and not in any respect pay wide quantity for an same. also, some vendors gained't settle for quickly a java server which contain tomcat listening to the web requests. i'm not asking about usual information superhighway hosting suitable assistance yet am fairly speaking about java apps and inexpensive documents centers (and if any of them are in india).
