Maybe a Puerto Rican will answer this question ... meanwhile, I've been married to a Puerto Rican for 10 years, and he has the flag under the rearview mirror, and the decal across the top of the front windshield, and the license plate frame, and the keychain, and the bead necklace with the bead flag, and several t-shirts, and the big flag on the bedroom wall, and the framed map of the island, and the gold ring with the ceramic flag inlaid, and the casitas, and loves arroz con gandules and tostones y mojito....it's all part of cultural identity and pride. It's not patriiotism. He was born in Puerto Rico but raised in Philadelphia since the age of 4. He simply identifies himself as a Puerto Rican culturally, not politically, and really gets into his roots. By the way, he also has a collection of American flags in various forms, American eagle figurines (some with flags), an American eagle/flag tattoo on his chest, a Puerto Rican flag tattoo on one arm, and a tattoo (which I designed) on his back of el coqui holding a pipe wrench (he's a plumber).

RE:
Why do some Puerto Ricans like to hang their flags under the rear view mirrors of their cars?
I don't understand the patriotism to an island territory of the United States. I don't see the flags of the other U.S. territories such as: American Samoa, Guam, Marianas Islands, and the U.S. Virgin Islands.

They wanted to hang those flags above the rear view mirror of their cars, but, after a few accidents caused by not being able to see what was coming from behind, they decided to hang those flags UNDER the mirrors.

They view themselves as an independent culture entitled to sovereignty and freedom from Americanization. Think of the Phillippines in the first half of the Twentieth Century. And you know, they face poverty, racism and language barriers in the U.S. And they are a colonized people. So they are right to take back their identity through nationalism and the display of their flag.

They're proud of their country! Why should it bother you? Go by a little American flag and put it under your rear view mirror. Perhaps they want to differentiate themselves from other Latinos, who knows, who cares!

Who cares where they hang it as long as they have the pride to display it?
I have both a Jeep Cherokee and a Ford Ranger Truck and I have American Flag decals on both rear windows. This might seem odd to other people.
But again, who cares as long as we get the message across?

So you can see them better. It's a symbol of their pride, they don't wont to be controlled by anyone but their own.
