I was really into Dr Who as a kid, and actually met Tom Baker as a Dr Who competition winner.

It was great in it's time but I have to be honest and admit it hasn't aged well. Chris Eccleston for me is now the best Dr, and I would suggest you don't go back any further than him.

The elderly Doctor Who and his young granddaughter (Susan), in the very first episode 'An Unearthly Child', where trapped on the Earth, England in 1963, due to a malfunction of the TARDIS. But we are to find out, the Doctor & Susan have escaped from their own planet in another time, in an obsolete time & space machine. (This explains the malfunctions, and the Doctors lack of control over the TARDIS). They are both fleeing from something. (Never explained).
We are also to learn the Doctor was once a pioneer and is searching for something in the Universe. (Which is never explained).
As the Doctor once said, 'Susan and I are cut off from our own planet, without friends or protection. But one day we shall get back. Yes, one day, one day.'

David Tennant's Doctor Who makes a reference to once having children of his own.
As he would being a Grandfather in the first series.

I could talk about the first Doctor Who for hours, having seen the show from the very beginning.

Tom Baker was probably the best. Also know as the "scarf guy." I highly reccomend checking out the old episodes with him in them, and the movie. However, that was a budget British production, so be prepared for styrofoam rocks, wires, and other amazing special affects.

The guy in the current series is very good, though. He is my new favorite. He's a little too pretty for the role, tho.
