My best friend and I are not native speakers of the same language, yet we have been communicating for two years and learning more about each other and each other's language. We feel a deep emotional connection and so put extra effort into being as clear as possible and being sure that our meaning is clear. Of course, we accidently hurt each other's feelings because of cultural and lingusitic misunderstandings, but usually a little lingustic work solves the problem. Speaking different languages doesn't need to be a barrier to true affection; it can be a fascinating challenge because one must think clearly about the intended message. The result can be quite rewarding.

Mine is, and we can communicate very well most of the time.
It helps that we also know eachother's languages, so I can talk to him in my own, and he can talk to me in his.
We have children, and it is fantastic. They know both languages, and with no effort.
